The Phoenix Mercury continued their roster construction on Wednesday by trading for Portland Fire forward Chloe Bibby.
In exchange, the Mercury sent the Portland Fire the rights to forward Julia Ayrault.
The 6-foot-2 Bibby played in 14 games as a rookie for the Indiana Fever (nine games) and Golden State Valkyries (five) last year. Across those two stops, she averaged 4.8 points on 38.2% shooting and 40.5% from deep. She added 1.8 rebounds in 11 minutes per game.
She was the 11th overall pick in this year’s WNBA Expansion Draft by Portland.
The moves didn’t stop there for Phoenix on Wednesday, with the Mercury waiving guard Kara Dunn and forward Ashten Prechtel.
The team also suspended the contract of forward Kathryn Westbeld, who suffered a torn ACL in her right knee.
Additionally, guard Sami Whitcomb is undergoing a procedure on Thursday to remove a loose body in her left knee. She is expected to be reevaluated in four to six weeks.
Whitcomb started 20 of 43 games for Phoenix last season, averaging 9.1 points on 38.5% shooting and 36.1% from 3-point land. She added 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 23.9 minutes per game.
For the second time in three seasons, she finished fourth in Sixth Player of the Year voting.
Whitcomb re-signed with Phoenix on a two-year deal this offseason.
Born and raised in Kelseyville, California, I spent most of my summers growing up in Arizona. There were a lot of trips to Globe and the East Valley. Once out of high school, I attended the University of Arizona with a major in natural resources before eventually transferring to Arizona State and focusing on sports journalism. After an internship with Arizona Sports and graduating the following semester in 2017, I joined back on with Bonneville as a part-time web editor for both Arizona Sports and KTAR News before taking on the Cardinals beat and full-time role in 2021. I also started the Cardinals Corner podcast. At home, I am married with two kids, Brady and Baker, who keep me on my toes on a regular basis. If I'm not at home or at a game/practice, I'm likely on the golf course. In addition to my time at Arizona Sports, I have also interned/worked for Pinal Cental, the East Valley Tribune, Lindy's Sports and Athlon Sports.
